31 Sweet Well-Mannered Boy
Hunter
The lineup of mostly freshmen was a reasonable distance behind me, so I had enough space to make my private phone calls. I hung up the receiver, my spirits lifted. I'd just gotten off the phone with social services. The government agency needed to know of my concerns for Gerald Van Duke, who I explained could benefit from a welfare check. It made me feel better to have the authorities check on his well-being, the same way he was so sure to update my father on mine. You see, two can play that game. I wanted to place the call to the Agency yesterday when The Douche warned Ayanna to stay away from me, but the lines were down. I wouldâve forgotten all about it, if not for the meeting I had with him today.
Calling Social Services got me in a better mood after I spoke to my dadâ¦more like, after I remained quiet and listened to him go on and on. I was in a daze as I took my time wandering the lobby of the Dormitory. A minute alone was all I needed to decompress.
"Hunter, you should be in your room studying."
Miss Diana stood in the door frame. "Yes, ma'am."
"Come here." I did as she ordered and stopped inches from her, gazing up, the same way I used to as a boy. "What's wrongâand don't tell me nothing. I know when you're not okay."
I didn't even realize, I must have looked like a sad sap. It was unintentional, I never want to give off that impression, unless I was pretending. Still, I could tell the truth to Miss Diana. "I just got off the phone with my dad."
"Let's go," she said as I tagged along behind her, through the hallway and into the large back kitchen where are meals where prepared.
The island had wooden stools all around, and I sat down next to the chair that had Miss Diana's bag slung over it. Although she had many handbags, I knew this was hers because her bags were always filled to the hilt. She would always joke that she carried her whole life in there. Charms and mementoes followed her wherever she went. When we were younger, she had to warn Leo never to search for candies in her purse because they would more than likely be 5 years old.
Mrs. Peters was putting food in the fridge. She is the head of the kitchen and worked at the Academy for many years, but we first met during my freshman year. Because of my close relationship with Miss Diana, I've been allowed kitchen access. The only other person allowed in the back is Leo. Mrs. Peters is tall and medium build. She made it a point to exercise because she told me once, being around food all the time was much too tempting. Her spiral curls were in its usual bun, up and away from her face.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Peters." Her eyes lit up when she saw me, as always.
